# What Does Edge Infrastructure Cost?

Whether you build your own edge presence or use a platform, the cost drivers are the
same four things. Here's how to think about them — and when buying beats building.

## The short answer

The cost of edge infrastructure depends entirely on whether you build or buy. Building
your own edge sites means paying for hardware, colocation, bandwidth, and operations
at every location — costs that multiply with each site and typically run from
thousands of dollars per site per year for a modest deployment to far more at scale.
Using an edge platform turns all of that into usage-based pricing: on Edge, a small
virtual machine costs a few dollars a month and CDN, DNS, and bot protection start

There is no single "average cost per edge server" because the term spans everything
from a mini PC in a branch office to GPU racks in regional data centres. What is
consistent is the cost structure — so that's the useful thing to understand.

## The four cost components of DIY edge infrastructure

Every self-built edge deployment pays for these, at every site, for as long as it
runs.

### Hardware

Servers, storage, and networking gear for every site — plus spares, refresh cycles every few years, and capacity you must size for peak load rather than average.

### Colocation & Power

Rack space, power, and cooling at each location, billed monthly per site. Costs multiply with every region you add.

### Bandwidth & Connectivity

Transit and peering at every site, often with committed minimums. Distributed sites mean many separate contracts and providers.

### Operations

Monitoring, patching, hardware replacement, and on-call cover across time zones — typically the largest long-term cost, and the hardest to scale.

## Why edge costs multiply rather than add

The defining feature of edge infrastructure is that it is distributed — and
distribution is exactly what makes DIY expensive. A single well-run data centre
amortises its costs across thousands of servers. An edge deployment inverts that: many
small sites, each needing its own hardware, its own connectivity contract, its own
remote-hands arrangement, and its own share of monitoring and maintenance. Ten sites
don't cost ten times one site; they cost more, because coordination overhead grows
with count.

Utilisation makes it worse. Each site must be provisioned for its local peak, but most
sites sit well below peak most of the time. You pay for capacity around the clock that
serves traffic for a few hours a day. This is the core inefficiency that

alone.

## Why most teams should buy, not build

Building your own edge makes sense in a narrow set of cases: hard data-residency
requirements, specialised hardware at specific sites, or workloads physically tied
to a location, such as factory-floor processing. For everything else — serving
content and applications to users with low latency — a platform that already
operates hundreds or thousands of edge locations delivers the same outcome with
zero capital outlay and no operations burden.

The comparison isn't close on smaller scales. The hardware budget for a single
self-hosted site exceeds years of platform fees for an equivalent workload, before
counting bandwidth contracts or the engineer-hours to keep it healthy. Platforms
also fix the utilisation problem: you pay for what you use, not for idle peak
capacity.
