# What is an Edge Data Center?

For two decades data centres got bigger and further away. Edge data centres
reverse the trend: smaller facilities, closer to the people they serve.

## Edge data centre, defined

An edge data centre is a small data centre located close to the end users it
serves — typically in or near a city — rather than in a remote hyperscale
campus. Edge data centres bring computing, caching, and storage capacity to
the local level, cutting the distance data has to travel and therefore the
latency users experience.

They range from container-sized micro data centres at the base of mobile
towers, to a few racks in a regional colocation facility, to purpose-built
sites serving a metropolitan area. What defines them isn't size — it's
purpose. An edge data centre exists to be near users, and it usually works as

than standing alone.

Hyperscale facilities excel at bulk work: training models, running databases,
batch processing. Edge data centres excel at delivery and interaction. Modern
infrastructure uses both.

## Why proximity matters

Every kilometre between a user and a server adds latency, and no amount of
engineering can remove it — data cannot travel faster than light through
fibre. A round trip across a continent costs tens of milliseconds; across an
ocean, over a hundred. For a web page assembled from dozens of requests, or
an application that feels "live", those milliseconds accumulate into
something users can feel.

Proximity also changes the economics. Traffic served locally never touches
expensive long-haul routes, and origin infrastructure can be sized for a
fraction of peak load because [edge servers](https://edge.network/academy/what-is-an-edge-server) absorb
the rest. This is the same logic behind CDNs — moved from caching alone to
the whole facility.

## What's driving the edge data centre trend

Several forces are pushing infrastructure out of central facilities and
toward the edge.

### Latency-sensitive applications

Video calls, gaming, and real-time apps degrade noticeably when servers are far away. Proximity is the only fix physics allows.

### Growth in video and rich media

Streaming from local facilities avoids hauling the same bytes across the backbone millions of times.

### Edge computing workloads

Processing data near its source — devices, sensors, users — needs compute capacity distributed to match.

### Coverage beyond major hubs

Users outside the big internet cities deserve the same experience. Small local facilities make that possible.

## The logical endpoint: a decentralised network

Follow the edge data centre trend to its conclusion and you arrive somewhere
interesting. If smaller facilities closer to users are better, the ideal
infrastructure isn't a few hundred company-owned sites — it's capacity
everywhere, contributed by many independent operators, coordinated as one
network.
