# What is the Edge Cloud?

The cloud gave us on-demand infrastructure. The edge cloud puts that
infrastructure where it actually belongs: next to your users.

## Edge cloud, defined

The edge cloud is cloud computing delivered from servers distributed close to
end users, rather than from a small number of centralised data centres. It
offers the same on-demand services as traditional cloud — compute, storage,
content delivery, DNS — but runs them across an
[edge network](https://edge.network/academy/what-is-an-edge-network) of
many smaller locations, so every user is served from nearby.

You still get the things that made the cloud attractive in the first place:
no hardware to buy, pay for what you use, scale on demand. What changes is
the geography. Instead of choosing "us-east-1" and accepting that users in
Sydney will have a slower experience, your workload lives everywhere your
users are.

heavy back-office systems in a central cloud while moving delivery, caching,
