DADI has rebranded to Edge. Find out more.

AMA Recap: December 21, 2018

The last Ask Me Anything of 2018 was as jam packed as ever, with a brilliant set of questions from the DADI community.

🔗Question 1

Has DADI ever thought about doing an interview with a YouTube influencer like Blockchain Brad? Seems like a great way to spread awareness, and he is really good at discussing fundamentals.

Joseph Denne: Yes, but as we move to market, we naturally need to move away from the social media side of crypto. As we’ve seen in spades, there are a lot of immature and uninformed individuals who do nothing to strengthen blockchain tech, and this side of things is damaging for the whole space. For DADI to be successful it has to be credible to business first and foremost. So, while we do undertake interviews from time to time, we have to tread very carefully.

🔗Question 2

Are there detachable plugs available for the node’s power supply that are made for the various standards? Hate to ruin the beauty of the whole design by using an adapter.

Joseph Denne: Well, I think there are seven plug “standards” worldwide. We had to choose the top few, as to support of them would had led to a lot of wastage because of minimum production sizes etc. So, we have three plug types supported: UK, USA and Europe. If you’ve been sent the wrong one, let us know and we’ll get a new one out to you. If you have a different plug type than those we support directly, then I’m afraid you’re going to have to use an adapter.

🔗Question 3

After the DADI network fully operates, will all of the tech services of DADI Ltd be added to DADI token-staked nodes network or some of them will be running outside of it in future?

Joseph Denne: There’s no hard line at which point everything switches over. Rather it is a cross fade. The ambition is for all existing services to be migrated to the mainnet, including those currently in a DADI VPC.

🔗Question 4

Versus.com joins the DADI network news is huge for DADI, so according to that, approximately how much % of DADI traffic will be assured by Versus.comto DADI network in current status?

Joseph Denne: At the network’s current scale, I’d estimate it at around 2-3% of available capacity on average.

🔗Question 5

Did the stupid Slack ban affected DADI works/progress? Any fall back due to this issue and what is the team’s long-term plan in light of this?

Joseph Denne: Hah, painful. It hit us hard yesterday, taking out some time for some of the team. But Slack isn’t the only method of communication that we have🙂. One account was bad enough, but it also took out all of our integrations. And a developer at a partner agency was also banned for once visiting China. As a result, we are binning Slack and moving to a self-hosted Rocket Chat. We are also now exploring the potential for supporting deployments of this technology within the network. Bottom line: Slack cannot be trusted. Their approach is heavy handed, lacks even a modicum of common sense and asks serious questions about privacy on the platform. If you use them, I urge you to look at the alternatives.

🔗Question 6

If DADI is being used by Iranians, or North Koreans one day, and DADI were to be forced to shut them out by the authorities, what would you do? DADI still holds control over the customers, and the nodes. The jurisdiction have every right to demand it. Claiming “decentralization” isn’t a good excuse, since the company is based in the UK.

Joseph Denne: There is no blanket policy in the UK requiring us to terminate accounts from any given country like there is in the USA. We would assess the situation in the event of such a policy being put in place here, and would work around it. For example, if we were an American business today, our policy would be to setup local businesses that worked within local jurisdictions, side stepping what is clearly a ridiculous policy. Longer term the ambition is for the network to move to a fully autonomous footing. However, there as a lot of work to be done to get to this stage.

🔗Question 7

Is there any point to put the founding node online if rewards only start q1 2019? Any incentive?

Joseph Denne: Well, you’re helping to build the future. Nodes online now enable us to run tests which in turn enable us to get to the point of them earning faster than they otherwise would. So, think of it as investment in your own future. It’s worth noting that the Pi is extremely low powered. Here in the UK it costs around £1.50 to run one for an entire year.

🔗Question 8

Are there any earning nodes besides FNs currently? If yes, how many are there? How many tokens were staked for earning nodes (maybe pre-investor’s or partner’s nodes?) besides FNs?

Joseph Denne: No.

🔗Question 9

Is there any way to setup a private testnet using DADI?

Joseph Denne: Yes, this can be done through us. We have private deployments in testing with several potential partners.

🔗Question 10

What’s the deal with the Market Maker? Are the tokens loaned? Are Market Maker services going to wind down soon?

Joseph Denne: They provide liquidity using our own funds. There are no plans to wind down these services as things stand.

🔗Question 11

From where did the Market Maker firm provide their tokens to use for liquidation?

Joseph Denne: They are market bought.

🔗Question 12

What lights should I see blinking etc. on the founding node? I saw it online the 19th. Now it is offline and last-seen-date has reversed to November. How do I know it has something to do with the announced updates or if there is something not well connected?

Joseph Denne: Lights are more to do with the Pi than any network specific activity. Once we are through the last testing stages of their onboarding it should appear online and stable, but until then you may see inactivity.

🔗Question 13

Could you explain what “network-ready” means exactly (roadmap)? How does a ‘is-network-ready’ checklist look like?

Joseph Denne: In relation to our applications - CDN, API, Web and Publish, for example) -this is the point at which they are ready to be used on the mainnet. For CDN, this is true already – timings for others can be found on our roadmap:https://DADI.cloud/en/roadmap/

🔗Question 14

If the distribution is fixed between the different types of tiers, why doesn’t the rewards scale also for gateways and stargates? If at ICO price, 10% ROI was expected, now for the same revenues it should be around 200%.

Joseph Denne: They do scale. Full pricing and the implications for nodes are expected to be released early in the New Year.

🔗Question 15

Is prioritizing Network functionality for third party apps, WordPress for example, as pivot from customer feedback or was that planned for first part of 2019?

Joseph Denne: It’s a pivot to aid the go to the market for the network. Focusing on this side of the platform significantly widens the use cases for the technology, and crucially makes it easier for us to communicate what the network is and how it can benefit individual use cases. We are exploring methods of better leveraging the existing dApps as well. Expect to see more on this front in the New Year.

🔗Question 16

Where can I see/set the bandwidth usage for the founding node? Thought that would be a feature in the dash.

Joseph Denne: It will be. Our full explorer will be released in Q1 next year (we have a test version up and running internally). I should note that that FNs are rate limited to 100 concurrent requests at the moment. At full capacity they would use around 3-4% of a 100Mbps line.

🔗Question 17

Would a separate vlan or a dmz enhance security/privacy for the node?

Joseph Denne: Not really. The security built in to the network means that there isn’t a vector for challenging a Host, as they live behind home routers/firewalls. They are not directly exposed to the public Internet.

🔗Question 18

Using Versus.comas an example, can you give estimate figures on the savings that have been made or expected savings?

Joseph Denne: For Versus, not yet. We’re monitoring and modelling as we go. I can tell you that for Empire the model is showing a 74.4% reduction in costs.

🔗Question 19

Considering the Gateway onboarding is planned for Q3 2019, what will the selection process be? I would like to avoid at this point installing a rather expensive fiber network as it does take some time and I’m not 100% sure of having permission to run a Gateway from you.

Joseph Denne: I’m afraid we haven’t yet defined the processes for this. I do expect it to involve the testing of capacity and an introductory call/meeting with the team. As we scale out the process will become simpler, with the ambition being that we will move to complete self-onboarding in the fullness of time.

🔗Question 20

If you are using LBX to facilitate fiat payments and they are low on tokens, will those tokens be purchased from other exchanges and transferred in or are you hoping that will happen naturally?

Joseph Denne: When a customer buys a service from the network using fiat, $DADI tokens are market bought to fulfill the requirement.

🔗Question 21

Will it ever be possible to host a traditional website, as it is, on the DADI network? Like on a web hotel where you just upload the site (binaries, html, images, scripts etc)?

Joseph Denne: Yes. We are working to open up the containerised layer in 2019, making this a priority over our own apps.

🔗Question 22

What will power the DADI.cloudsearch function?

Joseph Denne: DADI API. And it’s actually already live, providing a searchable history of our AMA questions and answers. See: https://DADI.cloud/en/faq/

🔗Question 23

Any partnerships with search as a service provider like Elastic, Algolia?

Joseph Denne: Not at the moment.

🔗Question 24

How is network performance going to be measured? (Megaflops?) Ofc, performance for consumers depends on location as well. Will it be official for everyone to see?

Joseph Denne: We’re measuring performance in response time, so in milliseconds (ms). This is a generally accepted measure of the performance of web applications and internet connectivity and as such allows us to benchmark different apps in the network along with the network itself. We use jobs per second as a measure of the activity in the network. A job is a single request to a single customer application. These metrics will both be publicly available.

🔗Question 25

Will DADI be creating Gateway devices in house which can be bought or do we need to build the hardware ourselves?

Joseph Denne: Yes, we’re working on this. But building your own will be more fun.

🔗Question 26

How often would DADI’s revenue be converted as fiat to DADI tokens after Constellation? Daily, monthly? Converting in batches or in bulk?

Joseph Denne: On an ad-hoc/needs basis. As the requirement arises, we will market buy. In the first instance this is a manual process managed by our finance department and facilitated by our partners, but it will become automated in time.

🔗Question 27

At the launch of Constellation and the implementation of LBX’s tools in that release, will non-UK customers be able to do an exchange for $DADI with fiat?

Joseph Denne: We’re working on purchasing options that will support customers no matter their location.

🔗Question 28

When will the Founding Nodes begin earning on the network?

Joseph Denne: In Q1 next year.

🔗Question 29

Any update on when we can expect the node reward calculator/predictor that has been mentioned previously?

Joseph Denne: I don’t have a schedule for that to hand but I expect that we will be adding it as part of a general site refresh early in the New Year.

🔗Question 30

When does the ability to pay for DADI’s services with fiat start? Will it start with just EUR or will USD also be accepted from the start?

Joseph Denne: This should happen in Q1 (although not confirmed 100% yet). We’re aiming at supporting GBP, USD and EUR.

🔗Question 31

How is the marketing divided worldwide as to onboard country-specific websites? Right now most of the clients are based in Europe & US.

Joseph Denne: All existing customers are based in the Europe, but several are multinational.

🔗Question 32

How soon will marketing and promotional materials be available?

Joseph Denne: We’ve added a press section to our site with some supporting materials. You can see it here: https://DADI.cloud/press/ And we are planning a sales support area that will help the community to support the network through the provision of sales presentations and the like. A full referral programme is also being developed.

🔗Question 33

How would a database be distributed in the network?

Joseph Denne: The storage layer in the network will facilitate this. The edge network provides two types of storage: short term (caching) and long term storage. For example of what a distributed database looks like, you can check out OrbitDB ( https://github.com/orbitdb/orbit-db).
