# Pricing

One rate for what you store. Nothing — ever — for rolling back. Unlimited
checkpoints, no per-device fees, no retrieval tiers, no meter waiting for your
worst day.

## Protect a real machine, free

The free tier is the full product — checkpoints, rollbacks, encryption, the agent
surface, fleet view, and alerts — capped by volume, not crippled by feature gates.

Hitting the cap pauses new checkpoints and alerts you; it never bills silently and
never touches existing snapshots. Paid usage only happens with a card on file and
draws from the same prepaid balance as every other Edge product.

Beyond the free tier

$0.02 per GB per month, all-in

Deduplicated and compressed before it counts. Billed hourly from your prepaid
balance, with an optional monthly cap for a hard ceiling. Restores stay free at
every size.

Working launch pricing, in USD, identical in every region.

## What it actually costs

Dedupe and compression do most of the work — you pay for unique chunks, not disk sizes
or snapshot counts.

### A production VPS

Configs, app code & data — 60 GB unique after dedupe & compression, checkpointed constantly

$1.10/mo

After the 5 GB free tier

### A small fleet

3 servers, 500 GB unique data between them

~$9.90/mo

Unlimited devices — you pay for data, not machines

### The bad day

An agent misfires; full rollback of a 2 TB machine

$0.00

The bill that never arrives

## Pricing FAQ

Everything you need to know about how Vault billing will work.

### Are rollbacks and restores really free? At any size?

Yes. Edge charges nothing for data transfer out on any product — zero egress is our cost structure, not a promotion. Rolling back a 2 KB config or restoring a 20 TB machine costs the same: nothing. There are no retrieval tiers, no "expedited" charges, and no monthly restore allowance to exceed. If undo cost money, you'd hesitate — and hesitation is the failure mode Vault exists to remove.

### Why aren't checkpoints metered?

Because metering them would defeat the product. "Always checkpoint first" only becomes a habit — for humans and a default policy for agents — if taking one is never a cost decision. You pay for unique data stored; a thousand checkpoints of a mostly-unchanged machine barely add to it.

### Why is Vault more per GB than Edge Storage?

Raw storage is $0.015/GB-month; Vault is $0.02. The premium is the product: the checkpoint workflow, the agent verbs, native apps, the fleet dashboard, silence alerts, automated restore verification, and retention management. If you'd rather assemble it yourself, restic pointed at an Edge Storage bucket works today at the raw rate — same open format, so you can switch either way without re-uploading.

### Do I pay for the size of my disk or the size of my snapshots?

Neither, exactly — you pay for stored, deduplicated, compressed chunks. A 200 GB machine typically stores well under 150 GB, and each checkpoint only adds what changed. Keeping 23 snapshots of retention doesn't cost 23× the data.

### What happens if I lose my key?

Your checkpoints are unrecoverable — by you, by us, by anyone. That's not a policy, it's the encryption working as designed: the key never leaves your devices, so Edge only ever holds ciphertext. Vault generates a printable recovery sheet at key creation; store it somewhere that isn't the machine being protected.

### What happens when I hit the free tier cap?

New checkpoints pause and you're alerted — existing snapshots stay intact and fully restorable. With a card on file, pay-as-you-go continues past the cap at $0.02/GB-month, billed hourly from your prepaid balance with an optional monthly cap. Without one, the free tier can never bill you.

### Is there a per-device or per-agent fee?

No, on any tier. Per-device pricing punishes exactly the people this product exists for — fleets of servers and the agents operating them. You pay for unique data stored, however many devices and agents contribute to it.
