Weekly Update: W/C 13th July, 2020

As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and development in the open, our founder writes weekly updates to the Edge community. This is the 69th of these updates, originally posted to Telegram.

Hi everyone đź‘‹

The network has performed 28,127,115 image transformations in the last 30 days, transferring 2.3TB in the process. That’s roughly 10 a second. We’re looking at exposing this sort of data on site in an upcoming release.

This week we’ve been working on Gateway and Host, switching all the logic to use appID instead of hostname. Logging at the moment exposes the customers hostname in the network. We’ve changed this over to further enhance security, and we’ve been rolling those changes through the core apps.

The team have also been working on CDN, refactoring the way the configuration is managed. This is being moved over to our GPRC layer to improve efficiency (speed & resilience).

An update was released for the earnings process to reduce the impact on network API. There were a series of token requests in the process that were driving heavy load unnecessarily. These were picked up when looking through network telemetry, and have now been updated to ensure efficiency.

Work has begun on updates to the deployment processes for Stargate. At the moment when we redeploy all of the Hosts connected to a Stargate try to reconnect in sequence. This floods network API with requests from the Sync service. We’re implementing a system to manage the connections to ensure that we never end up in a network flood scenario (which could threaten live services).

We’ve also improved a number our metrics dashboards, further adding to our visibility of the performance of services in the network.

In case you missed it, the transcript of last Friday’s AMA with Jason Jang from TNC can be seen here: https://edge.network/en/knowledge/network/ama-recap-july-10th-2020/

We continued to roll out projects for a series of engagements building on our technology. And our support for Cookalong continued: they are now four events in, with a fifth this evening with Sir Ian Botham. The platform, which is built on Edge tech, is performing well. And Cookalong has been getting a lot of exposure, including segments on The Chris Even’s Breakfast Show, Good Morning Britain and The One Show.

And finally for this week, we completed the update to the roadmap for the last two quarters of 2020. It will be pushed to Github shortly. In the meantime there’s a summary available from Arthur on site here: https://edge.network/en/updates/network/roadmap-updates-q3-and-q4-2020/

Enjoy your weekends.
